Grayslake was a sleepy outpost of 3,800 residents when Fred Schaefer decided he wanted to help his new hometown in some way. Schaefer said he was told he might want to join the Grayslake plan commission and zoning board of appeals. It seems the plan commssion and zoning board work agreed with Schaefer, 92. He was honored by the village board for 50 years of service.
