Sen. Kirk alert, asks for Blackberry

Two days after undergoing brain surgery for a stroke, U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk is alert and breathing on his own, doctors say. In fact, he asked for his Blackberry back, Dr. Richard Fessler told reporters at a news conference at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, where Kirk underwent surgery and is beginning his initial recovery. Doctors, however, did not grant that wish.

In the early 1990s, Joe Principe could usually be found at McGregor’s in Elmhurst or at Metro in Chicago, seeing punk rock bands like Bad Brains, Bad Religion, Green Day, Screeching Weasel or Naked Raygun. “We would go see any band play, whether we knew them or not,” said Principe, 37, who back then was a skateboarding teen at Holy Cross High School in River Grove.
