Fire caused extensive damage Tuesday afternoon to a house that was being remodeled on the 1S400 block of Sunnybrook Lane near Glen Ellyn, authorities said. Glen Ellyn Lt. Craig Eldridge said firefighters responded at 12:47 p.m. for what became a three-alarm blaze that swept the second floor of the house.

Former House Speaker Dennis Hastert beat up on a former ally, Newt Gingrich, in stumping for Mitt Romney in Sugar Grove Wednesday. Hastert said he still calls Gingrich his friend, but, having worked with Gingrich in Congress, he doesn’t want to call him Mr. President any time soon. “You’ll find that a lot of people who worked with Newt Gingrich over those years aren’t supporting Newt Gingrich,” Hastert said.

Warm weather snaps record; heat to last all week

Todays warm temperatures hit a record high of 81 degrees as of 4:30 p.m., and that heat is not going anywhere as summerlike temperatures could break records in each of the next eight days. Wednesday was the third earliest 80 degree day in Chicago history, with the earliest coming on March 3rd in 1974 and the second earliest on March 12, 1990. Although forecasts call for warm weather over the next two weeks, meteorologists say we are not necessarily out of the woods yet.

Pelosi says state needs Jackson on House Appropriations panel

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi today publicly endorsed Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. in his re-election bid against primary challenger Debbie Halvorson, saying the state needs him as the lone Illinois congressman on the House Appropriations Committee.

Lyric Opera audiences have been burned by revisionist productions — think of the Eurotrash stagings of Verdi’s “Macbeth” and “Rigoletto” in 1999 and 2000, respectively — and no doubt some die-hard Baroque purists will find the company’s new production of Handel’s “Rinaldo,” which opened Wednesday night at the Civic Opera House, too over-the-top for their tastes. Well, that’s their prerogative. I found it a delightful show, one that serves up Handel’s glorious music with a needed nudge and wink.

Round Lake Park police dog credited for arrest

Round Lake Park’s police dog handler is crediting his partner for the quick capture of a man accused of fleeing his home after attacking his wife. Detective Tony Colon said Blade, a 6-year-old German shepherd, needed no more than four minutes to find the suspect wedged under a backyard deck of another house about 6:30 a.m. Wednesday.
