State police investigating fatal officer-involved shooting in Des Plaines

The Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force is leading the investigation into the fatal police shooting of an Elk Grove Township man described by authorities as a known gang member with an extensive criminal history involving drugs and weapons. Carlos Salgado, 44, a married father who lived in the Oasis Mobile Home Park, was killed Sunday afternoon during a confrontation with police.

Retired Illinois couple claims share of $656M jackpot

A retired southern Illinois couple has claimed the third and final share of last month’s record $656 million Mega Millions jackpot. Illinois Lottery officials introduced Merle and Patricia Butler at a ceremony in their hometown of Red Bud, where they bought the winning ticket for the March 30 drawing. The retired analysts chose to accept the prize as a lump-sum payment of $158 million after taxes.

Great Western Trail bridges under construction

Great Western Trail users on the east side of Lombard will have to spend one more summer detouring around Grace Street, St. Charles Road and the Union Pacific West Line railroad tracks. But come November, contractors should be wrapping up construction of three bridges to carry the trail over those obstacles.

Smaller towns have enjoyed savings from the mild winter just like everywhere else, but fresh off a week with record high temperatures, public works directors like Chuck Behm in South Elgin are faced with a storage problem if snow doesn’t return until next year.

At a time when Illinois is struggling financially, a report shows widespread misuse and abuse of state-owned cars. Some, in fact, are used mainly for workers commuting to and from the office. In 2010, 65 state agencies had 16,600 vehicles and spent $121 million on them. Now the Senate is expected to take up a bill already passed by the House tightening oversight on state-owned vehicle use.

A 19-year-old student from Schaumburg was found dead in her Illinois State University dorm at 9:30 p.m. Thursday. “It was shocking to hear this, Conant Director of Bands Kreg Moorhouse said of the death of Allison Zak, who played clarinet at the school.

Federal funds help Elgin groups fight child abuse, neglect

Federal money is helping four Elgin organizations expand home visiting programs and fight child abuse and neglect, but officials worry the money is in danger. A report released Thursday by Fight Crime: Invest in Kids Illinois showed 30,000 kids in the state suffered abuse or neglect in 2009 180 of those kids live in Elgin. And Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez said that number is probably low because of the cases that go unreported.

St. Joesph Catholic Church in Round Lake has roots to German farmers who lived in the area in the early 1900s, but it’ll be a multicultural base leading the way as it readies to start its next 100 years of service. “We have a few rich cultures that combine here. We try to preserve the best in all the cultures,” its pastor says. Cardinal Francis George will be the main celebrant for a Mass Saturday.
