Gov. Pat Quinn’s signature Friday on a law to give tax breaks to Sears Holdings Corp. and CME Group proved to be the final step to keep both companies in Illinois. “I’m exuberant,” said Hoffman Estates Mayor William McLeod of the move that will keep Sears in that town.

The ordinance would increase the minimum fine for “resisting a police officer or aiding escape” from $25 to $200, with a maximum fine of $1,000. Parks, playgrounds and beaches would open at 6 a.m. instead of 4 a.m., but still close at 11 p.m. In addition, the ordinance would “clarify the Chicago Police Department’s ability to enter into agreements with the necessary law enforcement agencies to deputize law enforcement personnel,” and allow the Mayor or appointees to execute agreements with public and private entities for anything related to the summits. In the summer of 2010, Mayor Richard M. Daley showed up at an anniversary event celebrating, and designed to further promote, Chicago’s downtown theater district. But the real news was made when the mayoral voice started to crack while talking about the importance of the arts in public education. “Every one of these children can learn,” Daley said from the podium, fighting back tears.

Here’s my Top 10 for the Chicago season. Some have already opened and others just seem promising. Like the creeping tinsel at the mall, holiday shows in Chicago seem to start earlier each year. This season, it was “White Christmas” at the Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire even before the trick-or-treaters had ventured forth from their stoops. But bear in mind that theaters know how much Chicago audiences love their seasonal entertainments. If, like me, you’re an urban romantic in love with the classic downtown experience, this is the golden time of the year, full of family members enjoying the arts together and cramming in a live show between busy days and nights of shopping, eating and merrymaking.

Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke gave his annual “state of the city” address to the Batavia Chamber of Commerce Tuesday morning. “Now this is the one I really couldn’t wait today to show. But this is the real deal,” he said, flashing a slide of the vacant Golden Corral restaurant and smiling broadly.

Cardinal George blesses Wheeling parish center

To help accommodate the growing parish’s diversity and needs, St. Joseph’s in Wheeling constructed a $1.5 million multipurpose center. Cardinal Francis George led a liturgical blessing and attended a reception of about 200 people including Mayor Judy Abruscato and village officials.
