Deal close for artificial turf funding at Vernon Hills High

Libertyville-Vernon Hills Area High School District 128 officials are close to inking a deal that would bring artificial turf to the Vernon Hills High School football field. The Vernon Hills Park District board has approved an intergovernmental agreement with the District 128 board that calls for the park district to donate $100,000 to the project.

Sixteen-year-old Darnell Holt’s favorite color was red. And on Wednesday the halls and classrooms at Willowbrook High School in Villa Park were awash in a sea or red outfits, all worn by classmates and teachers paying tribute to the slain freshmen known for his infectious smile.

Bears’ Garza to visit health-conscious U-46 students

Two schools in Elgin Area District U-46, Parkwood Elementary and Eastview Middle School, have done well in the NFL’s Play 60 challenge and will be rewarded with a visit from Chicago Bears center Roberto Garza on Friday.

The building where a gunman opened fire on students in a Northern Illinois University lecture hall, killing five people, hasn’t been used since that day four years ago. But in another sign that the school is coming to terms with the tragedy, classes are scheduled to be held Tuesday inside Cole Hall.
