Elburn-area fire extinguished

Fire crews have extinguished a major house fire outside Elburn early Friday evening. The blaze broke out about 5 p.m. in a subdivison on the 2S200 block of Willow Creek Drive, located south of the intersection of Route 47 and Main Street in Blackberry Township.

A frisky new film showcasing some old pals made out of felt, charm and some kind of genius, the Disney release “The Muppets” overcomes a jaded streak reflecting its makers’ nervousness about selling Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear and the gang to an audience unfamiliar with “Sesame Street” (a Muppets chapter conspicuously left out of Disney’s production notes) or “The Muppet Show” or the best of the earlier feature-length films, “The Great Muppet Caper” being my favorite. Hence, “The Muppets” deploys a bit of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and a string of ’80s jokes about Molly Ringwald and “Benson.”

45 Cited During Sit-In on LaSalle Street Bridge

45 people were cited with civil disobedience charges after a sit-in was staged this afternoon on the LaSalle Street bridge. A Police Department lawyer said the protesters were officially cited with ” Pedestrian Failure to Exercise Due Care ” for blocking traffic access on the bridge. The lawyer stressed that no one was arrested and the citations, at less than $100, were similar to parking tickets. [ more › ]

Elgin Police nab Rockford man in undercover drug operation

A Rockford man is accused of selling crack cocaine and heroin to undercover Elgin police on several occasions, police said Friday. Ronald T. Doss, 34, of the 900 block of 11th Street, was arrested Thursday night while trying to sell 4.5 ounces of crack cocaine to police. The drug had a street value of about $5,000, officials said.
