Hannibal Buress sees glow of TV on the horizon

New shows for Fox, Cartoon Network could be next step for star stand-up Back in the summer, when we last left Hannibal Buress, he had sold out 16 shows at Zanies Comedy Club in Old Town. A son of the West Side, a veteran of Chicago’s stand-up circuit, he had also just left his job as a staff writer on NBC’s “30 Rock,” the kind of job most young comedians would cling to until his or her fingernails were split and bloodied. Make no mistake: He wasn’t much of a household name; in fact, though Buress has lived in New York since 2008, The New York Times has only recently seemed to notice him. Buress, though, arguably the most buzzed-about young comic today, had bet on his ability to write a TV show for himself, and by October, he was working on two shows. First up, a live series for the Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim; he’ll act on it and write some of it. The other show, however — that’ll be a showcase.

Prayer garden dedicated to Mount Prospect student

Teachers, students and family gathered under rainy skies Tuesday at St. Emily Elementary School in Mount Prospect to dedicate a memorial prayer garden to Molly Kohl, a 10-year-old student who died of leukemia over the summer. Molly was heading into the sixth grade at St. Emily when she died July 25, nearly 18 months after being diagnosed.

Elgin firefighter restores old firetruck as a gift for NYC colleagues

Elgin firefighter John Tobin of West Dundee found an old New York Fire Department truck in a Wisconsin junkyard and spent the summer restoring it to its original condition. He’s now giving it to the firehouse where it once was housed, in Queens, New York. The project shows support for the NYFD and also honors three Palatine firefighters who died in the Ben Franklin fire in 1973.

Villa Park to host new wheelchair motorcycle

Mobility Works in Villa Park will display what the company says is the world’s only wheelchair motorcycle from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, July 16-17, at its site on 155 E. North Ave. The bike will be given away at the Strugis motorcycle rally on the West Coast later this summer.
