URBANA – The University of Illinois board of trustees today chose a former university president to retake the helm of the institution on an interim basis. The board named Stanley Ikenberry president after accepting the resignation of University President B. Joseph White. Board member Edward McMillan called Ikenberry a “tremendous choice” to step into the interim role. “The University of Illinois is both fortunate and blessed to have someone of Stan’s stature to step in at this time,” McMillan said. The move was the university’s latest step in trying to move past an admission scandal in the wake of revelations that the university allowed well-connected students to get into the state’s most selective public campus over more qualified applicants. Ikenberry was president of the university from 1979 to 1995. He will take over from White Jan. 1 but will serve as an “interim president designate” to help with the transition until then. The trustees also announced the formation of a search committee to look for a permanent president. — John Byrne
